Samuel is asking Edwin for permission in using a few of his poems in a book he is writing about developing children's voices. He is wondering if it was in bad taste they way he asked in his previous letter because he hasn't heard from Edwin.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
